Those who know me aren’t surprised that I have a special affection for bed & breakfasts. I owned one of the first ones on California’s Central Coast and I authored the state’s first bed & breakfast guide book, Recommended Bed & Breakfasts: California. Part of my adoration of this sector of hospitality comes down to the imaginative and creative ways innkeepers keep guests delighted. BlissWood Bed & Breakfast Ranch is certainly leading the way with its summer Cool-Off package.

Set on a 350-acre working ranch in Cat Spring, Texas, BlissWood Bed & Breakfast Ranch is already pretty unique. The remote and rustic hideaway an hour west of Houston consists of 14 cabins and cottages of varying sizes, with woodsy furniture, full kitchens, sitting areas and porches. Some include woodburning fireplaces or woodburning stoves, whirlpool baths and hot tubs. Guests can also opt for some glamping options (Grand Safari Tent, Conestoga Covered Wagon, Deluxe RVs). Of course, all lodging includes a continental breakfast placed in the accommodation.

Summer Cool-Off

Summers can get a little “toasty” in Texas, but the ranch is helping guests to keep their cool in the intense Texas heat by offering a pool delivery – as in the actual lounge pool is delivered to individual cabins and cottages.

“Come on over and let us take care of the rest,” said Carol Davis, innkeeper at BlissWood, who came up with the idea for the Summer Cool-Off Package. The experience includes a 7.5 ft x 7 ft, 31″ high lounge pool, choice of a 6-pack of root beer or beer (from the inn’s pantry), fresh watermelon, popsicles, popcorn and trail mix. The package is an add-on cost of $89 plus tax for up to 4-people; it is available seasonally while supplies last.

Davis is hoping to attract guests who can make the round-trip city to country trek on a single tank of gas. The bed and breakfast is an hour’s drive from Houston and two hours from San Antonio and Austin.

More than pools

Ordering a pool is just one option. Guests can arrange private exotic safaris and animal feeding tours. Trapshooting, horseback riding, archery and fishing are there for the asking. Bikes and golf carts are also available for rent in this pet-friendly bed & breakfast.
